Very powerful string trimmer. I've had it a complete season plus and so far no problems. The auto string advances as needed. I had to disassemble the feed head only once so far; easily done. I refill original spool rather than purchase a new one when the string runs out. Rather simple to accomplish.

I don't think Black & Decker makes any good tools anymore. Took the Grass Hog XP out of the box and after assembly per instructions, plugged it in to give a try. After about ten minutes, the whole spool assembly fell off! Seems the factory missed a washer on the spool shaft and the fiber spacer burned off letting the whole assembly scoot down the flowerbed to the end of the lawn. After cussing out B&D for so shoddy a product, took back to the garage to find a nice brass washer to repair unit. Went back to trimming along the driveway and the factory wound string jammed up and it took a pair of pliers to dislodge one of the strings and finish the job. This will be my last Black & Junker tool!

POWER
The "Grass Hog" is powerful---as powerful as any gas trimmer I've used. It is particularly useful for cutting very heavy weeds. The dual string design makes it twice as effective as a one-string trimmer. I suspect that it would be ideal for "mowing" fairly large areas which are inaccessible to regular lawn-mowers.

CONTROL
Unlike my typical 1-string gas trimmer, which is in effect variable speed, the Grass Hog (and every other electric trimmer I've used) is one-speed. I find it difficult to control the Grass Hog for just edging grass along walls, or light cosmetic trimming. It tends to instead gouge out holes in my lawn. In contrast, with my gas trimmer, I could do most edging at "idle" speed with perfect control, and only rarely have to rev up for tough weeds. I can easily trim small weeds from my gravel driveway with my gas-trimmer without disturbing the gravel, but the Grass Hog flings the gravel at high speeds in all directions, at me, my cars, etc. I can easily dig out individual weeds in my flower garden, or pick-out individual weeds from a field-stone wall with my gas trimmer, but NOT with the Grass Hog.

AUTO-FEED
The auto-feed was not initially working. I lubricated the shaft where the line-spool fits on with some grease, and thereafter the autofeed worked fine. Part of the reason the auto-feed works well (when it works), is that the spools only hold a short supply of string. Because of the dual-string design, it is time-consuming and awkward to re-start the strings. I suspect that purchasing pre-loaded spools would get expensive. For most trimmers, the secret to keeping the auto-feed or bump-feed function working properly is to load only a short amount of string, and not too tightly. A soaking with WD-40 or silicon spray may help.

CUTTING RADIUS
The auto-feed on the Grass Hog only feeds about 3" of line on each side. 3" x 2 = 6" plus the 4" diameter of the spool housing = 10" radius rather than the advertized 14" radius. Since that is well short of the cutting guide in front, you have to raise the guide to cut along walls. On my 1-string gas trimmer, the spool is less than 3" in diameter, and the string extends at least 6"---I suspect that centrifugal force holds the string in a tighter cutting plane, which makes for more precise control.

ERGONOMICS
The lower hand grip is adjustable (for users of different heights) on most trimmers (gas or electric), but not on the Grass Hog. I'm 5'10" and it was too short for me---I had to lean over using it, which meant that I had a back-ache after using it for a half-hour. I suspect that it would be very unpleasant for anyone taller, or much shorter.

EVALUATION
The Grass Hog is probably a good choice for very heavy weed cutting, for individuals ca 5" 8" tall. It is "less than ideal" for shorter or taller individuals. The Grass Hog may be an ideal mower for clearing areas not accessible to normal lawn mowers, but it is "less than ideal" for precise or light cosmetic trimming. Since I use trimmers primarily for cosmetic trimming around rock walls and my garden, it was less than ideal for me. One session with my neighbor's Grass-Hog convinced me that having my gas-trimmer repaired would be a better use of my money.
